A grow tent is for exactly what it sounds like it’s for. You grow your plants inside it. Pretty simple, but the concept of having an isolated, light-proof controllable environment to grow your plants in is more important than it sounds. Many people choose to grow without a grow tent and personally I think it’s a mistake. If you try to grow in a closet, garage or any space in your home you will have numerous issues with an open grow.

Managing your Micro Environment
The inside of a grow tent is the perfect environment for growing your cannabis plants. Everything about the tent has been thought of and engineered to support your grow. The tents are light proof providing a discreet lightproof area which also prevents outside light contamination. Yes, that’s a real thing. When your plants are flowering you can’t have any light leakage during their 12 hour lights out period.
The floor of better grow tents is waterproof and removable for easy cleaning and drying. There are entry ports built into the tent which allow you to bring in power cables and ventilation without having any light or air leaks. The inside walls of the grow tent are made of a reflective surface which redirects light back on to your plants which helps prevent hot spots or dark areas.
The confined area of the tent allows for easy ventilation and scrubbing of the smelly air that can be produced by cannabis plants. The ventilation ports allow for air intake as well as being expulsion. Generally, your air is run through a charcoal filter before it exits the grow tent to remove odors.
By keeping your cannabis grow in a sealed area you can control temperature and humidity with much more accuracy thus making it a great place for you to grow your plants. If you were to grow in an open closet or room in your home you would have no way of scrubbing the smell out of the air or to raise or lower the humidity around your plants.
Another important item about hydroponic grow tents is making sure you get a tent with enough headroom for growing cannabis. There are many size options available for grow tents. Cannabis is generally a tall plant if not kept. You also need to think about the thickness of your plant lamps and how much distance between your light and your plants is needed. If you add all this space together you are generally looking at 24 inches or more. That’s 24 inches of lost growing space. Do yourself a huge favor and get the tallest grow tent available. Grow tents of 72 inches or higher are best. Generally, 80-inch tents are the tallest available and a great choice for the urban farmer.
The Advantages of Grow Tents
As mentioned above, apart from total control, grow tents offer more advantages than just growing plants in a spare closet.
- Grow tents are fantastic for pest control. It makes it much harder for pests to get a foothold on your crops when the crops are sealed away safely.
- The reflective 600d mylar covering of the inside of a grow tent lowers your need for light energy which in turn lowers your electricity bill. That reflective coating prevents hot spots and helps spread light evenly around your grow area.
- Some cannabis strains release a greater concentration of odors. Without the tent, there is no way of containing and scrubbing those odors from the air in your home.
- A growing tent also circulates air extremely well, which brings fresh air to your marijuana plants that contain the carbon dioxide needed for strong, healthy growth. Hydroponic grow tents are designed so you can use a carbon-filter air purification device to scrub odors from the air. The integrated system takes air from outside of the tent that brings the CO2 to the marijuana plants, and a carbon filter removes the odor from the air and disperses the scent-free air outside of the tent. This is referred to as ‘negative pressure,’ and it’s shown to be unbelievably reliable at keeping the air inside a grow tent pressurized so no odors can be released or “leak out” while giving fresh CO2 to the garden.
- Have a water accident? The waterproof floor and walls of a grow tent won’t be destroyed by water. It also makes it much easier to dry up water or clean up spills by removing the floor of your grow tent for a deeper clean.
- You never have to worry about flowering your plants. During the 12 hours of darkness per day that is required to flower your cannabis plants, it is imperative that no light is leaked into the grow area. Any light during this 12-hour period could stop the flowering phase or even worse produce hermaphrodite plants which produce seeds and buds.
So, to follow up the advantages of growing in a tent are:
- The tent magnifies and reflects light to your plants more evenly
- It adds a protective barrier against pests
- It allows you to control airflow and fresh air to your plants
- It helps make you grow more power-efficient
- It helps you remove odors from the air
- There are many size options for the urban farmer looking to have the thickest and strongest grow
Now that we’ve told you why you should be growing with a grow tent we are going to go over the top grow tents and what makes them great. This is intended to help you decide when purchasing a grow tent. We will review the grow tents that we have tested by size grouping.
Remember that one of the most important factors in choosing an indoor growing tent is the height of the tent. Make sure you pick a tent that is generally high enough for your plants and lighting system. Get a tent tall enough to grow big fat juicy cannabis plants. If you do plan on using a shorter tent due to space limitations you can “train” your plants to be short and still grow large buds.
Small indoor growing tents with no accessories
These smaller tent options can only support up to 2 plants at a time but they grow tent will fit perfectly into a closet, your basement or the corner of a room. These kits come without accessories, it’s up to you to customize the equipment, or maybe you already have some of the equipment, either way, this option is for you.
The Gorilla Grow tent brand has been a favorite of mine for some time now. After testing many tents, I stuck with the Gorilla Brand grow tent.
Gorilla Grow tents are sturdy well-made tents that will hold up for many grows; I think they are the strongest grow tent on the market. Their LTGGT22 measures just two and a half feet by two feet wide and five foot seven inches tall. With an optional extension kit, the LTGGT22 grow tent can reach up to six foot seven inches which give you more options as far as strains you can grow in this tent. With limited height comes limited strain options or you’ll need to know how to train your plants to keep them growing short.
The tent is supported by rust-resistant steel poles which create the underframe of the grow tent. This frame is very strong and is perfect for hanging even a heavy grow light. The outer material of the grow tent is made of 1680D thick canvas which is lined with 100% reflective diamond mylar. Most cheaper tents are made with reflective 600d mylar. This reflective coating prevents hot spots and shady areas within your grow area.
The zip out windows allows you to take a look at your cannabis plants without having to unzip the whole door while the main door provides ample access to your growing area. The doors and windows are secured in place with strong thick zippers which operate smoothly when opening or closing access windows.
On the side of the grow tent, you will find two light proof ducting access ports. If you need to run electrical cords or venting into the indoor growing tent this makes it possible to seal in light and air around the intake ports leaving a seal. On the inside of the tent, there is a handy mesh bag hanging that is great to leave your tools in like your hydrometer.
I would highly recommend the extension kit for this tent or you’ll be very limited to the plants you can grow. For example, if you use an LED light which is 6 inches thick and requires 18 inches of space above your plants that’s already 2 feet of space gone. Your plants would be limited to 4 feet of grow height. That’s fine for short growing strains or for people who train their plants but not nearly tall enough for a beginner grow.
The Apollo Horticulture grow tent measures 3 feet wide and 6 feet tall giving this tent a grow area of 9 square feet. This tent is taller which opens up the strains you can grow in it quite a bit. I would still tend to stick Indica strains as they’ll grow a little shorter.
Like all the other grow tents we’ve reviewed the tent’s structure is created with rust-resistant metal poles which make up the superstructure of the tent. The interior is lined with 100% reflective diamond mylar and the outside is a heavy duty canvas. The fabric is strong and double stitched to prevent light leaks. The heavy-duty zippers were easy to open and close but lacked a flap to cover the actual zipper.
The front door is large and allows for easy access to the whole interior of the grow tent. There are also two windows located on either side of the tent. These are covered but can be opened to reveal screens. You will also find to light proof access ports that are perfect for electrical cords and ventilation pipe. There are also bottom ventilation panels which can be opened if more air is needed inside the tent.
There is a large front door for easy access, and two windows, one on each side. The tent includes mesh panels at the bottom for ventilation, as well as round openings to pipe air in and out and let power cords enter. Like all of the tents we’ve reviewed this tent came with a floor tray which is removable and makes it easy to clean up dirt and spills
We love the fact that this grow tent comes with a manual, require no tools and that comes with a 90-day warranty.
Complete Small kits: small grow tents with accessories
We are including complete kits as part of this review because they can save you a lot of time and money. My first grow tent was a kit and it was great for learning in. With an all in one kit, you save yourself the time of sourcing accessories and it’s easy to setup because you get everything at the same time. These assembled packages are perfect for beginners and also ideal for experts.
What happens when you combine a great indoor growing tent with a top-of-the-line LED light? This kit. It includes the same GGTLT22 tent we reviewed earlier and adds on a host of goodies to make your next grow as easy as possible.
We’ve paired the KIND LED K3 450-watt full-spectrum grow light with this small tent. This super powerful LED has an extremely high PAR value of 650. LEDs are measured In PAR, not Watts. This is a virtual sun compared to other grow light kits. The 450-watt light unit only consumes about 220-Watts of electricity. No big power bills with this setup. The lighting unit also comes with a timer so you’ll be ready to control your vegetation and flowering states without an issue. The power of this light will help you have the thickest and strongest grow possible which means bigger and more buds in the end.
Also included in the kit is a very powerful inline duct fan with adjustable speed. This fan will allow you to draw clean air in from the outside of the tent and exhaust hot air out of the tent without a problem. The included hygro-thermometer provides temperature and humidity readings for inside the grow area. There is also a clip-on fan included which is great for keeping your plants moving, this will help them grow strong stems.
Medium grow tents with no accessories
If you already have all the gear needed to grow and just want to expand your grow or maybe you want to start off with a bigger grow, either way, we have you covered with reviews on several medium size tents that will be great for indoor plant growing. If you are looking for a grow tent that can handle 4 to 6 plants than these tents are the perfect size for you.
This option is likely not going to fit in your closet. Coming in at 4’x4’x6.5 tall this is a great sized tent for bigger grows and allows the grower more room to move around in the tent.
The support structure of the Apollo Horticulture indoor growing tent is made of rest resistant metal poles that will easily support the weight of any lighting system you may have or want.
The interior of the tent is lined with heavy duty100% reflective diamond mylar which helps prevent hot spots and shaded areas within the grow space. The heavy material cover is double stitched to prevent light leaks and is strong enough to stand up too many futures grows. One thing I didn’t like is that the zippers aren’t covered by a flap but the zippers are large and high quality.
I love the removable Mylar floor try that just pulls out, it’s great for cleaning up spills and dirty without having to climb into the tent accomplish it.
The large front door provides very easy access to your plants while the two windows, one on each side of the tent are covered with mesh to prevent pests from getting inside. When the windows are closed there is zero light leak. There are also several round opening ports for air vents and electrical cords which provide a way to get what you need inside the tent without creating air or light leaks.
This grow tent also comes with a 90-day warranty although I can’t see why you would ever need it. This baby is solid.
I decided to review this grow tent because of the huge amount of positive reviews I found online about it. Over 500 people gave it a 4.5 out of 5 so I had to give it a test and see how it held up to my scrutiny.
At initial look, the iPower GLTENTXS1 grow tent is very similar to other tents I’ve reviewed in the past but there are a couple of new treats included with this grow tent.
The tent material is made up of a 3-ply vinyl, not canvas like all of the other tents I’ve tested. This material is 5mm thick and is extremely heavy duty. There is no way this material is going to wear out after even dozens of grows.
Other special parts of this grow tent is the duct ports. All tents have light proof ports to allow you to bring in power cords and ventilation pipes but the iPower GLTENTXS1 takes it further. Not only are the duct ports extending outside the tent they extend inside as well which makes light leak a thing of the past.
The under the structure of the tent is also rust resistant and made of extra-sturdy metal poles that can support just about anything you hang from them. Big lighting unit? No big deal, this tent can handle it without a doubt. This grow tent also has removable floors otherwise known as a floor tray which makes it very easy to remove the floor to clean up spills.
Medium grow tents with light and accessories
Gorilla Grow tents have put together this complete package for you. Gorilla has done all the work of testing out the accessories for you. The price looks high at first glance but this grow kit includes a state of the art high power LED grow light. This kit is a great deal when you look at the cost of all its parts.
The 4’x4’x6 foot grow tent is so easy to assemble because of its rust resistant metal tubular frame system. The tent is vented by an inline duct fan with an active carbon filter. This means that as clean air is drawn into the tent the old air is sucked through the carbon filter before being exhausted meaning no smells! The fan operates at various speeds so you’ll be able to really dial in your ventilation to meet the needs of your cannabis plants.
Other accessories included with this package are a hygro-thermometer, a clip-on fan and two rope ratchet that are perfect for hanging your lighting system at the exact height you need. The ratchets also allow for lowering or raising of the grow light as your plants grow.
The real big deal about this indoor growing kit is the KIND LED 750-watt full-spectrum panel LED Grow light. This baby can flower up to 8 square feet of space, enough for 6 to 8 plants. The LED is a full spectrum panel and provides both Vegetative and flowering power with the flip of a switch.
As many of you know by now I’m a huge fan and champion of LED Grow light technology. The KIND LED is a top performer which I’ve personally tested and found to be an exceptional unit. It provides intense grow light deep into the canopy of your plants. At the same time, this unit uses less than half the electricity of the equaled powered HPS light. The Kind LED grow light also runs with much less heat than any HPS lighting system.
TopGrow has put together a great all in one kit that will get a beginner from thinking about growing cannabis to actually having beautiful healthy plants in the ground. They’ve made it so simple that all you need to do is add pots with soil and seeds and you are ready to grow.
This tent is great for growing up to 4 plants and they have the room to stretch out to 6.5 tall which means you can really grow any strain without having to worry about the plant getting too tall.
The tent itself like all the other tents we’ve tested is sturdily built on a rust-resistant metal tube frame which can support pretty much any grow light. The fabric is thick and contains 100% reflective Mylar on the inside to prevent hot spots and dark areas within your grow.
The 600 LED light package is included to bring massive growing power to your tent. The light provided is a perfect match to the size of the tent and will allow you to flower plants in an 8-square foot area and vegetate plants in a 10-square foot area. The lighting unit also comes with multiple built-in fans which keep the LED cool. The grow lights full spectrum light creation will treat your cannabis plants to all the light wavelengths it needs for plants growth.
Other important grow items included in the package are a vent piping
I think this is a great starter package because it’s an all-in-one solution that will take a non-grower and make them a grower very fast. There is no need to do endless research for each piece of equipment as I’ve done all that work for you. The actual price if this package is so cheap that you won’t be able to part it together on your own.
Large grow tents
By large, we mean a tent that can hold 6 or more full-grown plants. Here’s where you start becoming a producer for multiple people and your tent takes up half the garage or more.
Since I’m a more experienced grower I do like larger tents for growing. I like to be able to get inside and get down and close with my cannabis plants. With 16 square feet of growing room there’s enough room to grow 3 plants at a time and still be able to provide one on one care to each of the plants in the tent.
The extra height provided by the VIVOSUN grow tent is also a blessing. You can run any kind of grow light in this tent and still have enough room for any strain of cannabis plant you want to grow. There will be plenty of headroom for your plants to stretch out and grow huge buds.
Unlike the other grow tent manufactures VIVOSUN offers a full 2-year warranty. That has to tell you something! This tent is very well made and will hold up for many grows.
The tent is great at controlling light both into the grow space and out of the grow space. VIVOSUN takes quality seriously as they provide great quality zippers which are easy to use and won’t break after using them for a while. The tent also has a removable tray floor and an extra-large access panel.
Not only would I grow cannabis in this tent I might just move in too.
This tent is a monster the Gorilla GGT59 measures a massive 60” X 108” X 74”. This is another grow tent you could move into if you felt the need to sleep with your plants. Like all of Gorilla Grow tents, it’s made from 1680D fabric which is lined with 100% reflective Mylar. The structure of the tent is made up of rust-resistant metal poles and has an optional included extension cut to increase the height of the tent by another foot.
The structure of the tent can support several heavy lighting units without any issues.
Like Gorilla Grow says, “there are no cheap plastic parts on this tent”. Each entry port is double-cinching which makes it impossible for light or bugs to enter the tent. The extremely large access door makes it very easy to access all your plants, even the ones at the back of the tent.
If you just want to peak at your plants there is a zippered window that gives you a great view of your plants without having to unzip the whole front door. Like the other tents the Gorilla GGT59 also comes with a spill-proof floor. This baby can hold a load of spilled water and soil and then can just be pulled out and cleaned. Awesome!
Large grow tents with light and accessories
So, we have to disappoint you a little at this point. At the time I was writing this article there were no large tent kits available with good quality accessories. We didn’t want to waste your time reviewing sub-par kits so we are excluding them from this review. If a good kit comes on the market we’ll review it and update this article.
